Chapter 13
Anvi continued to listen across the sand. A noise squelching out a few tones had caught her attention. She wondered if it was actually more than just her imagination.
It happened again. The sound stoked her interest with each repetition. A soft commotion had been growing in the distance. The sound faded, then grew again as she continued to focus on it.
The repetition sparked some dormant memory, some ingrained instinct. Its harmony was familiar somehow. Like a song! Songs that she had heard when she had been smaller, younger.
There was no distinct memory of this particular song, just the memory of listening to something that her mother had sung once before in the past.
Mother had long ago felt the rhythm from another source and had reached out. Anvi remembered how her mother had responded, singing the same chain of notes, reflecting the harmony.
She was not here anymore.
Anvi was alone.
Alone to listen to the new noise.
This, too, was a new song, clattering away in a foreign rhythm. It was new and exciting and became more open to her as she listened to its intricate pattern.
Others identical songs chimed in from different directions. They called back and forth now. Across the distance, each source was singing a similar yet distinct song of overlapping complexity. Some of the sources conversed with each other, but others seemed unaware of the conversation.
The pulses and pattern of each seemed to be formed in the same way, but the notes were like a coded message. Excited, she memorized them and began to analyze their flavors.
Another new song struck up. It was strong, heavier and slower than the others, and had begun beaming out loud, wailing across the desert with a loud, deep voice. She could feel its volume resonate against her skin.
Anvi tried to approximate the distance, hearing from one side of her body, then the other. The method gauged the direction in stereo, refining the range and bearing.
This was interesting and new! She had never heard anything so loud! So clear now! Who could make such a noise? It was so strong!
She tried to mimic the pattern quietly to herself in her mind, continuing the tune and deciphering the soft notes as she went.
These singers didnât belong here, though. They were not born here. Nothing born here made that noise.
They were just like her! Had they, too, been abandoned by their mothers? Left to die in their shells in an ill-fated accident just like her?
That did not make sense. The sources were outside, far away from each other, but they were close to her, just a short distance away.
Anvi paused in her excitement, realizing that to wail like thisâto sing out into the desertâwas dangerous! There had been many smaller noises before. They had come and gone with some fading out over time; others were stopping in midsong as though they had been turned off by some dissenting hand. Some had even become more fevered and fearful as time went on! She knew very little of
